Begin your year with humility

Begin your year with humility

Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. (‭Matthew‬ ‭3‬:‭15‬ NIV)

As you embark on a new year, it's imperative to begin it on a right note. As you read this first devotional on the spoken words of Jesus, let us learn some life transforming lessons from our leader and Saviour, Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

The first words of Jesus recorded by Matthew in the gospel he wrote speaks volumes on the attitude of Jesus. When John came baptizing, Jesus stood in the queue to be baptized. Surprised by this, John said, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? (vs. 14), but Jesus calmly answered him saying, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.”

Few things to note here. Firstly, Jesus, being the Son of God, was humble enough to allow a mere man to baptize Him. Humility is a hard virtue for us human beings. But let me emphasize, without it you cannot make it before God. Saint Augustine said, "Its pride that changed Angel into devil; its humility that makes men as Angels."

Secondly, Jesus was interested in fulfilling all righteousness. Now, righteousness is being and doing what is right to the standards God has set. Though Jesus was sinless, still He stood in queue for baptism to set an example for the rest of the generations to come. He knew the generations to come needed this to fulfill righteousness. So, He set the standards for us to follow.

Are we ready to begin this year with these attitudes?

Wisdom quote: Humility has great power.

Prayer point: Father, grant me the grace of humility and help me to live to the standards you have set for me in your Word in Jesus name. Amen.
